Set Up a SQL Endpoint in Azure

This guide provides a streamlined overview for setting up SQL Endpoints and adding them as a data source in Konekti using either Azure Synapse or Microsoft Fabric. Detailed connection steps after creation of SQL endpoints are available here.

Setting Up an Azure Service Principal

Before configuring Azure SQL Endpoints, create an Azure Service Principal for authentication:

  1. Register an Application and Create a Service Principal:
  2. Create a New Client Secret:
  3. Record Credentials:
    • Note down the Application (client) ID and Client Secret. Store these securely as they are required for configuring the database connection in Konekti.

Adding Azure SQL Endpoint as a Data Source in Konekti

Choose either Microsoft Fabric or Azure Synapse to set up your Azure SQL Endpoint.

Using Microsoft Fabric

  1. Create a Fabric Workspace: Set up a workspace and link your Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 (ADLS Gen2).
  2. Enable Service Principal Access: In the Fabric Admin Portal, enable service principal access under Admin API settings.
  3. Obtain the SQL Analytics Endpoint: Retrieve the connection string from your Fabric workspace's SQL Endpoint.
  4. Load Data into Tables: Upload and load your files into tables within the Lakehouse.
  5. Assign Roles to Service Principal: Assign necessary roles via Service principal support in Data Factory.

For detailed instructions, refer to the Microsoft Fabric Setup Guide.

Using Azure Synapse

  1. Create a Synapse Workspace: Follow the Quickstart: Create a Synapse Workspace guide.
  2. Load Data into SQL Pool: Use the Load Data into SQL Pool tutorial.
  3. Obtain the Serverless Ondemand SQL Endpoint: Locate and note the endpoint URL from your Synapse workspace.
  4. Assign Roles to Service Principal: Assign necessary roles via Manage Synapse RBAC Role Assignments.

For detailed instructions, refer to the Azure Synapse Setup Guide.

Connecting the SQL Endpoints as a Database Source in Konekti

After setting up either Microsoft Fabric or Azure Synapse, follow the steps outlined in the Creating a Database Source.
